33degrees50minutes South

33degrees50minutes South is a work for live electronics and percussions – it explores the point of departure for a sonic excitation – the striking of a vibrating membrane or string. The electronic component, performed using a Kyma system and a Wacom tablet counterpoints the acoustic instruments by extending and subverting the timbral domain in relationship to the percussive attacks.

‘Al Anbiq Dialogue’ for Oud, Wacom tablet and Capybara. Turkish oud resonances are used as the template to bring to life a range of other sounds through cross-synthesis — a kind of genetic engineering, drawing on the signifiers of different musical traditions to create a fresh and invigorating voice.

W2O and the WiTilt

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

W2O (WiTilt to OSC) is a data processor, running on Mac OS X, for use with the Wireless Accelerometer / Tilt Sensor version 2 by Sparkfun. More specifically, W2O is a combination of a Bluetooth data server and an Open Sound Control client.

3-D tilt / accelerometer measurement data transmitted from the WiTilt v.2 sensor is received via Bluetooth, packaged into customizable OSC messages, and then sent out to any destination over network through UDP.

The gongs of Asia ring out with full vigour, infusing Kyma synthesis algorithms with a startling call to attention, to dance, meditate and to celebrate – bringing a new meaning to these signifiers within an ever evolving musical language that is SynC. This work establishes a dialogue between the acoustic sources and the computer, an exchange that is at once musical and ever changing.

This video is an archival recording by the artists (camera Katherine Griffiths), from a performance in 2006 at the Aurora Festival, Sydney, Australia. The performance was hosted by the Campbelltown Arts Centre.
